Known in the art community as “gino”, Dr. Mendonsa is a graduate of Cambridge University in England and an ethnographic specialist in African art. At present he paints in New Mexico and is at work on a book of short stories and a film on a New Mexico painter. Some of his renowned photo art resides today in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. His graphic art has been used in college textbooks. He has also won awards for his fiction and academic writing. His documentary films have been shown on PBS and other television venues. His oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings hang in galleries, private collections and in institutions.
Not unlike much of the art of Africa, gino’s paintings are sometimes abstract, while some of his art is representational, leaning toward impressionism.
He defines his art as “symbolic expressions” that strive to highlight the diversity of human experience and our capacity as a species to appreciate beauty and color.
